WISDOM STANDS WITH JUDGE HANNAH DUGAN

We offer you WISDOM'S support for Judge Dugan.

WISDOM leaders were dismayed to learn Friday about the arrest of Judge Hannah Dugan in Milwaukee. Judge Dugan is accused of alerting an undocumented immigrant (who was to appear in her court on an unrelated matter) to the fact that ICE agents were in the building. The man was later arrested outside the Courthouse. On Friday, FBI agents came to the Milwaukee County Courthouse and arrested Judge Dugan.

We believe that Judge Dugan's arrest is uncalled for. It is an attempt to intimidate judges. Judge Dugan acted as a compassionate human being, and as a judge concerned for the integrity of her courtroom.

ICE has no business in Courthouses, Churches, Schools, Mosques, Synagogues or Hospitals. These are public institutions that function because people have confidence and feel safe in them. We cannot let them be turned into hunting grounds for a government agency with an agenda other than the business of those institutions. With so many recent reports of ICE picking up the wrong people, their presence is threatening to everyone when they invade a courthouse, school or place of worship.

WISDOM applauds Judge Dugan for taking a principled and humane action. We are proud that she is a member of MICAH and WISDOM. We ask our other members to keep her in prayer. We also call on our members to be strong in opposition to attempts to create fear and division, and to damage or destroy the public institutions that help to hold our community together.

We will not quietly consent to the rise of authoritarianism.
